Are you looking to buy an electric dog fence? There are fences offered in stores, online, and through dealers. In these difficult economic period, everybody is trying to save money. You can keep a hunk of money by buying a system with a community store or online and installing it yourself.

The mechanics of putting up an invisible dog fence are simple enough that many people can control the process over a weekend. The most important element to invisible dog fences is the guidance after you set up the unit. If there isn’t accurate training after the system is installed, the whole fence is meaningless.

Buying the Gear

Before you go to the store to purchase a fencing unit, try to get an estimated measurement of your boundary. The majority of units can maintain many acres of land and can get as little as a few feet. You can also keep your dog in the front area, the back yard or together. The wire you place is where your dog can be restricted, whether it is a circle, square or an odd outline.

Select a unit that has enough wire, includes flags, a transmitter, collar and instruction guide , and information for installation. If you call for a second collar, buy it at the same time, that way you raise your probability of receiving a matching unit. Make sure that your fence is the appropriate fence for your pet. The collars deliver a slight correction to your dog if they get too close to the wire, so size really matters. A shock that will irritate a lab is quite unique from one that will influence a toy poodle.

Setting Up the System

The first step you want to do is locate the outlet where you will plug in the transmitter. If it is in your garage, you may want to drill a little hole through the wall to permit the ends of the transmitting wire to come into the house. Once your wire can reach the ground, you will want to dig a two to three inch ditch around the boundary where the dog will be restricted to. Place the wire inside the ditch, leaving enough at the ends to contact the transmitter, and cover the wire.

Put the wires in the transmitter as directed by the instructions and turn on the system. Get a receiver in your hand and stroll the perimeter of the invisible fence. Put a flag at intervals around the wire each time you get close enough to the wire that it causes the receiver to create its warning sound. This will supply a visual aid for your dog when you are training him to stay inside the boundaries of the fence.

Training

It is highly recommended that everyone teaches the dog to utilize the system. This is how you introduce the system to the pet. You should continuously reference the training manual or training DVD that is provided to get specific tips. But here are a few tips of simple training. First, put a long leash on your dog’s collar. Cover the prongs on the receiver so that it doesn’t give a correction just yet. Walk your pet around the yard and allow them approach the flags. Each time the alert beep goes off, tug the leash towards you so they know that the sound they hear is not good.

Once you do this continuously for a week, reveal the prongs and allow your pet to try the fence by him self. When they go back to the correct limits, praise them excitedly. After about a week he won’t walk past the flags and you will see the results your were seeking. Once he doesn’t need to be on the leash any further, remove every other flag every week until they are all gone. Pair the invisible dog fence with a dog door and you and your pet will have the freedom you both love.
